Have a look at the following student examples.

What is wrong with them; why are these sentences not good English?:

I’ll give you a hint: Something is missing.

What is missing? The verbs.

Whether you’re speaking or writing, please check that your sentence has a verb.

Rule: Every English sentence must have a verb.

The correct sentences are:

It is not normally used like this.

Why is “throw” not correct?

Verbs are words that describe what someone or something is doing in the sentence. Examples: jump, cry, reads, is speaking, will go, have talked.

Please take note that “am,” “is,” and “are” are verbs too.

Exercise 1

Correct the following sentences:

1 I also weak in my writing.

2 I able to speak English.

3 Thanks a lot for sending your tips, which very useful to me.

4 Our dog called Smokey.

5 You so crazy!

Don’t Forget Am, Is or Are. They are verbs too!

Am, is and are are also easily forgotten in sentences where they are an auxiliary verb. Those are verbs that help the main verb in a sentence.

For instance, in:

Noel is having a good time.

“Is” is the auxiliary verb.

Simon and Sofia are getting married.

“Are” is the auxiliary verb.

2 We not travelling to France this summer.

3 I reading English newspapers these days.

4 You coming to the movie tomorrow?

5 My friend helping me with a computer program tonight.
