Not one of my favourite bands, but a lot of their songs are simple, funny and sassy, and well, I think they’re, in one word, grrreat. They remind me of the Beatles.
I’ve put some of Blur’s nineties classics in the form of gap songs on the website. You know the formula: click on the link to listen to the song on YouTube. Whilst you’re listening, fill in the missing words in the lyrics.
Listening to songs (or to someone speaking) and reading the words at the same time is very very good for your English. So that’s why we’re doing it; not just to enjoy beautiful music.
Here is song number one to get you started:
Country House
Blur
And so the story begins
City dweller, successful fella
Thought to himself oops I’ve got a lot of ____________
I’m caught in a rat race terminally
I’m a professional cynic but my heart’s not in it
I’m paying the price of living life at the limit
Caught up in the centuries anxiety
It preys on him, he’s getting ______________
He lives in a house, a very big __________ in the country
Watching afternoon _____________ and the food he eats in the country
He takes all manner of pills and piles up analyst bills in the country
It’s like an animal farm lots of rural ____________ in the country
He’s got morning glory, life’s a different ____________
Everything going jackanory, in touch with his own mortality
He’s reading Balzac, knocking back Prozac
It’s a helping hand that makes you feel wonderfully bland
Oh it’s the centuries remedy
For the faint at heart, a new ______________
He lives in a house, a very big ____________ in the country
He’s got a fog in his chest so he needs a lot of ______________ in the country
He doesn’t drink smoke laugh, takes herbal baths in the country
Says she’s come to no harm on an animal ______________ in the country
In the country, in the country
Blow, blow me out I am so sad, I don’t know why
Blow, blow me out I am so sad, I don’t know why
He lives in a house, a very big ______________ in the country
Watching afternoon ______________ and the food he eats in the country
He takes all manner of pills and piles up analyst bills in the country
Oh, it’s like an animal farm lot’s of rural ______________ in the country
He lives in a house, a very big ____________ in the country
He’s got a fog in his chest so he needs a lot of _____________ in the country
He doesn’t drink smoke laugh, takes herbal baths in the country
And she’s come to no harm on an animal _____________ in the country
