How to Download Reading Material, Workbooks and Learning CDs

Archiving some old stuff again:

Hush, Don’t Tell Anyone about This Site

Here’s a link to a website where you can download English (learning) books for free: http://englishtips.org.

As with all things that are for free, not everything is as wonderful as it sounds. The links don’t always work. That’s because the book publishers often ask the website to remove the link to their books.

Nevertheless, you can find many good books on this site. There are many reference works available; such as grammar books, vocabulary books, travel guides, and books about literature. Some of these you can use as self-study books. Definitely try downloading some audio books and popular novels. There are always some Stephen King novels available, and other popular thrillers. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, try the Harry Potter readings, narrated by Stephen Fry. If you’re a beginner, you could also read from the wide choice of children’s or young adult literature.

Self-Study Books

For self-study books I recommend English File, or American English File. They’re graded, so there are books for beginners through advanced. As the titles say, English File uses British English words, spelling, and pronunciation. American English File uses American words, spelling, and pronunciation. Not that the differences are drastic, but it’s good to know.

Vocabulary Books

If you’re looking for a good self-study book to learn many words, try Vocabulary in Use. These classic books come in four levels, and they’re excellent for teaching you vocabulary about certain subjects.

Grammar Books

Another classic, but for grammar, is English Grammar in Use. Again, there are beginner books through advanced.

How does the downloading work?

In order to download the books or audios, first you need to register. This only takes a few minutes.

The next step is to find a book or audio that you like. First click on “More” to open all the information. To start the download, click on “I accept.” You’ll see a number of links; follow these to download the files to your computer. If the link doesn’t work, sometimes you get lucky when you click on the button that says “Mirrors.” If you follow these, you’ll often find a working link (not always). Sometimes it’s a bit of work, but hey, these are free books. If it doesn’t work at all, try another book or leave a comment to notify the site administrators that the link doesn’t work. They will put up a new link asap.

Some files have a password protection. The password is englishtips.

I’m sure you will be able to find many other books that I haven’t mentioned, simply by browsing.

Enjoy.
